Glass blowing has been practiced in Mexico since the early 1500's. In Jalisco, they've become well practiced in this artistry that was brought over during the Spanish colonialization. The technique starts with small balls of glass that have been heated in a special hearth until they are molten and malleable. The artist attached the glass to a piece of metal conduit that they then blow through, creating a space inside the glass ball. They then model the ball by turning it around on its conduit, reheating the shape, using metal tools to create bends and points, and blowing more air inside. It's a tricky process. If he blows to hard, the glass will break. If he gets it too hot during reheating, the shape will be lost. He must move quickly, efficiently, and with great skill. At the end of the process, the piece must be cooled before touching, as it's still incredibly hot. The finished result is a work of art, never to be duplicated exactly.
