This hand painted jewelry is a spin off of the beautiful Russian black lacquered boxes. Made in the Moscow area, the pieces start with tightly compressed layers of papier-mache. The wet layers are pressed into the desired shapes and placed into a hot linseed oil bath. After drying for 30 days in a special oven, the pieces are primed, painted with a colored lacquer, and dried again. It Is only now that the detail work can be painted. After the design work is done, multiple layers of lacquer are applied, the piece is dried again, and finally polished to a glossy finish. The pieces are then handed over the metal artists for a delicate finishing touch in silver filigree.
