Haiti has one of the highest unemployment rates in the Western Hemisphere. While jobs may not be plentiful, old steel drums are. Pierre-rock is one of the artisans of Croix-des-Bouquets, living in Village Artistic Noailles. He comes from a family of artisans. After his father died in 2009, he tried to attend school, but they didn't have enough money for him to continue. He started making metal art and it became his passion. He still lives with his mother and some of his brothers and sisters and has two young daughters to care for. To make each piece, he starts by cutting a drum down one side and rolls it out flat. He then hand sketches the designs, and cuts them out with tin snips. Depending on the design, each piece is then hand pounded, hand painted, or both. Since every piece is made by hand, each one will have slight variations making them one of a kind pieces of art.
