The Snow Maiden is the heroine of various legends. In one story, a childless couple makes a girl of snow who, to their delight, becomes animated. Only she will melt if she falls in love. Indeed, her heart begins to warm her when she meets Lel', the shepherd boy. Some say she melted of love, but one legend contends her parents sent her to the North Pole to help Father Frost deliver presents, and therefore she could at least visit once a year. Our Snow Maiden Fairy Tale doll beautifully illustrates the legend.
This matryoshka was hand made in the Upper Volga region, the Russian center of nesting doll carving. The pieces are first carved from linden wood near the painting workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia. The artists start by hand painting the background, then they work layer by layer using a combination of decoupage and painting to complete the scene with great patience and care. Once the very last eye lash is painted, the masterpiece is given time to dry. Finally they baptize each doll in multiple layers of non-toxic water-based lacquer to make a marvelous matryoshka that will delight children and collectors.
