Moradabad, India, is the home of amazing Indian artisanry and culture, but also a significant level of poverty. For years, exporters took advantage of the situation in order to make money, while the artisans continued to struggle. Through this cooperative, they are now on track to not only support their families, but break the cycle of poverty completely. Artisans receive fair wages as well as business training. The goal is for the artisan to become self sufficient, or "graduate", and create an independent business. Once they are standing on their feet and ready to leave the umbrella of the cooperative, a new artisan is brought in and the process begins again. The enterprise's Artisan Welfare Society was created in 2000 to advance charitable activities, including clean water, education, and health initiatives. The organization currently works with 49 artisan groups, employing over 500 individual artisans.
