Ground cloves from Sri Lanka (85g). All our spices are purchased fresh off the tree or out of the ground from small-scale marginalized farmers. The spices are dried, ground, and packed as soon as possible post-harvest, ensuring a dynamic flavor in your cooking. In 1997, four families came together with the idea of improving the lives of disadvantaged producers through trade. They started by buying coffee from a cooperative in Colombia, with the fair trade premiums directed to educational scholarships in the coffee growing region. This project has grown to support 200 scholarships per year! The endeavor continued and trade relationships were formed in Bolivia, Peru, Ethiopia, Tanzania & D.R. Congo. Once things were running smoothly within the coffee industry, they moved on to other foods, starting with the formation of a Colombian company to produce dried fruit and cane sugar that provided positive employment for displaced women. They also developed trade relationships with small-scale tea growers in India, heirloom rice farmers and coconut oil producers in the Philippines, spice farmers in Sri Lanka, & vanilla growers in Uganda. The fair trade premiums paid are directed to different projects based on the needs of the farmers; healthcare benefits, school scholarships, agricultural technical training, or co-op projects.
Certifications: Farmers are selected for their organic practices and are verified as holders of organic certification by the Department of Export Agriculture in Sri Lanka. Due to cost, each farmer does not hold the rights to their certification certificate and therefore, we do not state organic certification on the package label.
