Product Description

Functional can be fun with this woven herringbone purse! Woven jute makes these bags truly unique in appearance as well as durable. Hand woven by the women of Bangladesh, you head turning bag has a unique story to tell as well.

Since 1972, the population of people living under the extreme poverty rate in Bangladesh has dropped from 82% to 9%. They have worked incredibly hard to raise millions of marginalized people above that $2.00 a day marker. While their achievement is remarkable, living in poverty, rather than extreme poverty, is still a difficult life. Tarango is one of the dedicated organizations focused on raising living conditions even further to hopefully one day lift their country out of poverty yet another step. They address poverty from a wide range of angles, including their Handicraft Program that began in 1989. Marginalized and rural women are supported in a four layer approach: training, supplies of raw materials, marketing, and guidance into self-directed action. It's been tremendously successful in helping the women who participated. In addition, Tarango runs a village savings and loan association, a women's entrepreneurship development program, a healthcare program in the Barisal region, and Safe Home (a shelter for women and their children who've been victims of gender violence). Their overall reach extends to more than 18,000 women in the districts of Dhaka, Barisal, Dinajpur, Gopalgonj, Faridpur, Tangail, Gazipur, Bandarban and Lalmonirhat.
