Product Description

Black reverse glass painted picture frame from Peru measuring approximately 3-1/2" tall x 5-1/2 wide with 1-3/4" square frame area. Handpainted by the artisans of Peru in celebration of their Day of the Dead holiday. Each mirror is decorated using a process that goes in reverse, with details painted first, then layer upon layer until the background is painted last. November 1 and 2, The Day of the Dead — known in this country as All Souls Day — is an important date on the Roman Catholic calendar. The faithful are called upon to remember those who have passed on before. In Mexico, the occasion is marked by festive celebrations in honor of ancestors. It is traditional to present whimsical skeleton figures to one’s friends. This item is an example of this irreverent folk art, intended to remind us of the connection between the worlds of the living and the hereafter, and to confront death with warmth and humor.
